Psilocybin mushroom retreats in Mexico: a guide
What a psilocybin mushroom retreat in Mexico is like: the history of sacred mushrooms in Oaxaca, dosing, a week at Finca El Péndulo, screening and prices.

Mexico is home to one of the oldest living traditions of ceremonial mushroom use. If you are considering a psilocybin retreat, it is a natural place to do it. Here is what to know.
A long history
Psilocybin mushrooms have been used in ceremony in Mexico for centuries, especially by the Mazatec people in the mountains of Oaxaca, who call them niños santos, the holy children. The wider world learned about these night vigils in the 1950s through the Mazatec healer María Sabina.
Today, retreats in Mexico draw on that history while adding medical screening, preparation and integration.
What psilocybin is like
Many people find mushrooms gentler on the body than ayahuasca. Purging is less common, and the room is lighter: music, open space, room to move or rest. That does not make it easy. Psilocybin can bring up deep emotion, and that is often the point.
Taken by mouth, the effects usually begin after 20 to 40 minutes, peak at one to two hours and last about six hours. More in psilocybin myths vs. evidence.
Dose, decided together
At the Finca you sit with Krista before each ceremony and agree on your dose. Your history, your body and your intention all count.
A week at Finca El Péndulo
Our psilocybin retreats last seven days and six nights, with up to 15 guests.
- Three ceremonies: two with psilocybin and one with Satori.
- Hapé and cacao ceremonies, and voice activation.
- Equine therapy and Osho meditations.
- Temazcal and fire circle.
- Group and one-on-one integration.
- A sunrise hike, the pool and the lake.
- All meals, cooked on site.
The full day-by-day plan is on the psilocybin retreat page.
Who leads it
Krista was born in Mexico City and was a high school principal for 20 years before coming to the Finca as a volunteer. She learned to work with mushrooms in Oaxaca. Her ceremonies are calm, practical and warm.
Screening
Psilocybin’s main risks are psychological. A personal history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is a reason not to attend, and some medications need review. Because the week includes a Satori ceremony, the MAO-inhibitor medication list applies too. See our medical information.
What it costs
One price per person covers everything: from $1,850 USD in a shared dorm to $2,775 USD in a deluxe room. Details in how much a retreat costs.
The science
Psilocybin is one of the most studied psychedelics today. A 2023 study found it acts directly on a receptor tied to brain plasticity. Read psilocybin and neuroplasticity.
