Is ayahuasca right for me? An honest self-assessment
Who tends to benefit from ayahuasca, who should wait, and the questions to ask yourself before you book an ayahuasca retreat.

You are curious. You have read about it. Now you are wondering whether ayahuasca is actually for you.
It is not a yes-or-no question. It is about timing, readiness and an honest look at yourself. Ayahuasca is not a magic cure. It is a tool, and like any tool it works best in certain hands, at certain moments.
Who tends to benefit most
People who have hit a wall. They have tried therapy, books, coaching, sometimes medication, and something still feels unfinished. They are not in crisis. They function. But they are stuck in a pattern.
People who are spiritually curious. Not necessarily religious. Open to the idea that there is more to consciousness than the rational mind.
People who want change, not just relief. They are willing to do the integration work after the ceremony. The medicine shows you the door. You still have to walk through it.
People who can sit with discomfort. Nausea, purging and hard emotions are part of it. If the idea makes you want to run, it may not be the moment, or psilocybin may be a better first step.
Who should wait
If you are in an acute mental health crisis. Active thoughts of suicide, psychosis, or depression or anxiety that keeps you from functioning. Ayahuasca can destabilize a system that is already fragile. Stabilize first.
If you take a medication that cannot be combined with it and changing it, with your doctor, is not safe or possible for you. See medications that are unsafe with ayahuasca.
If you want someone else to fix you. The medicine does not fix. It shows. The work is yours.
If you have no room for integration. The retreat lasts seven days. Integration takes months.
If you have already decided it won’t work. Healthy skepticism is welcome, and many of our guests arrive skeptical. A closed mind makes the experience harder.
Questions to sit with
Am I willing to go inward? Ayahuasca does not take you to an outside paradise. It takes you into your history, your wounds and your beliefs about yourself.
Have I really tried the other paths? Some people get great results from therapy, meditation or medication. Have you given them a real chance, or are you impatient with them?
Can I integrate this? Will you give your insights time, or forget them the moment life gets busy?
Am I doing this for the right reasons? Chasing an experience, trying to impress someone, running from something? Or wanting to understand yourself?
Do I have the time and the means? A week away, plus a few months of attention afterward.
Am I stable enough? Not happy, not perfect. Stable. Ayahuasca amplifies what is already there.
Do I actually want to change? The medicine often shows what needs to change. Changing is uncomfortable.
You may be ready if
- You have done real personal work and still feel stuck
- You are willing to adjust medications safely, with professional help
- You have room for integration in the months after
- You are curious, not desperate
- You see this as a tool, not a miracle
- You are open to change, even when it is hard
What ayahuasca is and isn’t
It isn’t a magic cure, a substitute for therapy, a vacation, recreational, for everyone, or a one-time fix.
It is a mirror, a catalyst for change, a chance at deep self-knowledge, demanding, and something that asks for real integration.
